not that my math __nerdiness__ was ever in question, but i just had to share today’s delightful __“foxtrot”__ comic strip.

josh asked me how i knew that sin (pi/2) was 1 and i excitedly started to draw unit circles and 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles and recalling mnemonics such as Some Old Horse Caught Another Horse Taking Oats Away.

i have to admit, though, that the integral in the upper right threw me for a second and unfortunately, i am not nerdy enough to know binary code or whatever “FF-F8” is.

I actually failed an interviewee recently partly because he couldn’t remember what the sin/cos/tan ratios were, and didn’t know a mnemonic for it.

FF-F8 is hexadecimal for (255 – 248) =)

why were you asking him what the trig ratios were? is that something you need to know to be a game programmer? or just part of the minimum level of nerdiness required to work there?

We asked him, given a mage at p0 (point 0), facing p1, what is the angle between the mage’s facing vector (p1-p0) to the target, at P2. This was to see if a target was within the area of effect of an attack. In stepping him through it, he wasn’t sure to use sin/cos/tan, and didn’t know which ratio was which.
