Bottom line is, people don’t want to think for themselves, and will often gravitate towards those whose views most closely resemble their own. Especially if they’ve been told that 1) their views have been disregarded and marginalized by the “others” and 2) that their views truly represent the mainstream of current culture.

Every dictatorship has its supporters, from the subtle (Tony Snow) to the obvious (Rush Limbaugh) to the psychotic (Ann Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy).

You are right to be afraid. Our freedoms are being eroded as we speak and these people, and many like them, are telling us that it’s either not really happening, or if it is, it’s for our own good.

I speak as a man who never intends to vote Republican as long as I live – at least, so long as I still have a choice about it.
