I'd like to recommend two books for you. The first is "Conservatives Without Conscience" by John Dean. In it he dissects the origins, goals and objectives of the modern neocon movement. The second is "The End of America" by Virginia Wolf. She outlines the ten steps dictators always take before they destroy a free society.

They'll help you understand why Ann Coulter's brand of right-wing hatemongering, lies and doublethink appeal to so many people.

Bottom line is, people don't want to think for themselves, and will often gravitate towards those whose views most closely resemble their own. Especially if they've been told that 1) their views have been disregarded and marginalized by the "others" and 2) that their views truly represent the mainstream of current culture.

Every dictatorship has its supporters, from the subtle (Tony Snow) to the obvious (Rush Limbaugh) to the psychotic (Ann Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy).

You are right to be afraid. Our freedoms are being eroded as we speak and these people, and many like them, are telling us that it's either not really happening, or if it is, it's for our own good.

I speak as a man who never intends to vote Republican as long as I live - at least, so long as I still have a choice about it.

I've learned my lesson.

Hey, hope you are hanging in there. I had some major weak points this year. Life can be hard enough, without the 3rd year stresses of no sleep, sick patients, judging attendings, demanding residents, and now, all this pressure to figure out what we want to be in our lives. a 4th year told me at the beginning of this year to hum the mantra "this too shall pass" whenver things get really bad. it's helped quite a bit.
be gentle with yourself.
